This self portrait was painted as an experiment to see what effects alcohol has on artistic abilities. I can safely say from my experience that something changes! I had heard that art ability diminishes with the degree to which you are under the influence of alcohol, but it is well known that Van Gogh was a keen fan of an absinthe to paint with, so I gave it a go…Now I can see what Van Gogh was dealing with by drinking, it made my brush strokes bigger and braver at the sacrifice of fine detail and subtlety.
